Tatnall 16, Sussex Academy 20 - Friday, May 13 @ Tatnall

With a mighty win against Tower Hill on Wednesday, May 11, the Tatlax team won the DISC conference for a second year in a row and brought its record to 13-1.  It was a hard-fought game for both teams, but the Hornets were in control for most of the game.  Kali Clayton '23 earned the Tatlax Rox my Sox game socks for being all over the field, for making connections, for her instinctive and strong lax IQ, and for an all-around great game.  On attack, the girls were patient and poised.  At the midfield, they ran (a lot!), pressured, double-teamed, and dominated.  Meanwhile, the defense, led by goalie Devon Chipman '24 with nine saves, held its ground, found the checks, and adjusted to Tower's "Eagle" play and drives to goal. It was a fast-paced and well-played game, and the Hornets earned the conference title with the aggressive, skilled, and beautiful lacrosse for which they are known.  Goals were scored by Kali Clayton '23 (8), Lydia Colasante '23 (8), Charlotte Wilkinson '25, Teryn Singer '22, and Ivy Qualls '24. Assists were added by Katrina Cattermole '22, Qualls '24, Clayton '23, L. Colasante '23.

However, the JV team suffered their first defeat of the season against a strong Tower Hill squad.  The Hornets came out ready to play, jumping to a quick 1-0 lead. The score was tied 2-2 early in the first half, and then the Hillers gained momentum and the Hornets unfortunately could not stop them despite strong play all around the field. The Hornet’s three goals were by three different scorers: Olivia Perrin ‘23, Ava Mitchell ‘24 and Grace Willard ‘25.  Svava Korengal ‘23 and Athena Krikelis ‘25 added an assist each.  Goalie Abby Trice ‘24 had 4 saves to help keep the Hornets in the match. The Hornet’s played great team lacrosse with strong passing, defensive effort, and general hustle throughout the game.  Kathryn Wilkinson ‘25 earned the “Tatlax Rox my Sox” game socks for her tremendous play in the midfield and on defense and for her team-lifting level of intensity.

On Friday, May 13, the Tatnall Hornets faced their biggest foe of the season and fell to Sussex Academy 16-20 in a heated, back and forth, dramatic, and grueling game.  The crowd was mighty and engaged, the weather was all over the place, and the lacrosse was intense.  Charlotte Wilkinson '25 was our Tatlax Rox my Sox game socks recipient for being all over the field and for her endless energy and aggressiveness.  Her goal celebrations helped change the momentum of the game and kept the team energized and pumped.  Charlotte led the scoring with five goals, and others were added by Kali Clayton '23 (4), Teryn Singer '22 (3), Ivy Qualls '24, Katrina Cattermole '22, Lydia Colasante '23, and Paige Hiller '25.  Assists were added by Clayton (3), L. Colasante (4), and Qualls.  The score was just 4-6 when the skies opened up, and there was a rain delay.  It was then 6-9 at the half, and both teams had won an equal amount of draws at that point.  The second half was even closer, with a 10-11 score and Tatnall winning a few more draws than Sussex Academy.  The defense was terrific--Devon Chipman '24 had 11 saves, and Kate McConnel '23, Mia Conkey '22, Olivia Carpenter '22, Tessa Colasante '25, and Paige Hiller '25 anchored the defensive squad with confidence and poise.  The ball was back and forth for the entirety of the game, and the midfield kept up beautifully.  The ride on the transition was strong, and the Hornets never backed down.  While the outcome was not a victory, the lessons were plentiful, and the team remains energized.

Additionally, the JV team ended its season with a tough loss to a talented Sussex Academy team. After a long rain delay in the varsity game, the JV game was only one half long but the Hornets put forth their very best effort for every minute of the short game.  Once again the team worked as a unit with everyone playing with intensity. The “Tatlax Rox my Sox” game socks went to Olivia Perrin ‘23 for her momentum changing hustle and for being seemingly everywhere on the field all game. Congratulations to the entire JV lacrosse squad on their 4-2 season record and a season full of hard work and fun.

The Hornets now sit at #3 in the state.  They have a bye for the first round of the tournament and will likely face Archmere on Saturday, May 21 on the Tatnall turf at 11 am. It will be a hot one, but be sure to come out and support as the Tatlax crew works its way to a state championship!
