For a high school basketball player, scoring 1,000 career points is a pinnacle achievement in their high school career. It may sound easy, but most who achieve it will tell you it’s not.
A player doesn’t score that many points by accident. A lot of work goes into it, as well as other circumstances. To score 1,000 points, a player must be a consistent and relentless Varsity scorer. They must put in the daily hard work on and off the court, not only to develop a bottomless bag of tricks to fool defenders but also to fine-tune their athleticism to avoid injuries and have the stamina to dominate for all four quarters.
On Friday, January 20, Tatnall senior Emma Kirby '23 sunk her 1,000th point in front of a raucous home crowd during Swarm the Hive. Emma has been a Varsity standout since 8th grade. Arguably, she would have hit this milestone sooner had one of her seasons not been cut short during the COVID season. Kirby is currently the team’s leading scorer, as she is currently averaging around 21 points a game. With a stat like that, it’s no secret that Kirby has had some outstanding games, including a key performance that lead to Tatnall beating a tough and high-ranked Caravel team by one point.
We applaud Emma for her accomplishments, commitment, and passion for Hornet Basketball. Any player who scored 1,000 or more points didn’t do it accidentally. They have all put in countless hours shooting the basketball. We are so proud of you, Emma! We can’t wait to see what else she accomplishes as she continues her basketball career in college next year at Millersville University.
